Design Doha Biennial: the Designers, Installations and Exhibitions to See
Sabil by Jordanian architect, visual artist and Kayn Studio founder Dina Haddadin looks at the role of architectural practice within changing urban geographies. This monumental piece is in actuality just one colossal shard, taken from a tent-like pavilion assembled from nine identical ‘petals’ inspired by a traditional ‘seed of life’ motif. The structure itself features a living, breathable skin made of roughly woven goat hair, similar to the materials once used in the weave of traditional Bedouin tents, providing insulation thanks to pockets of trapped air. This allows the full pavilion to act as a sabil: a traditional Arab structure that offers not only shelter from the harsh conditions of the desert, but also acts as a water collection tower, embodying a dedication to craftsmanship and sustainability.
