Al-Bidda Wasl (الوصل) — Suspended Plaza
Wasl Al-Bidda_ Suspended Plaza is both infrastructure and invitation. It offers residents and visitors a new horizon for Doha — a safe, shaded, and vibrant civic space that celebrates movement, encounter, and cultural memory. For our studio, this project represents not only an urban intervention but also a contribution to Doha’s ongoing story: a gesture of continuity, inclusivity, and resilience that gives back to the pedestrian at the heart of the city.
Doha today is a city of remarkable transformation, where bold ambitions and rapid growth have created a dynamic urban landscape that bridges tradition with modernity. Along the Corniche and within Al-Bidda Park, the city already celebrates its relationship with the sea and its open green spaces. Yet, between these two vital landmarks lies an opportunity — to extend this generosity of public space, to strengthen walkability, and to weave together fragments of the city into one continuous, human-centered experience.
Al-Bidda Wasl proposes a suspended pedestrian plaza that rises above the highway to connect the Corniche with Al-Bidda Park. Designed as both infrastructure and public realm, the plaza takes the form of a 100-meter-radius ring that offers a 628-meter continuous promenade. This circular path is more than a bridge: it is a new urban destination. Walking and cycling lanes intertwine with shaded gardens, communal seating, kiosks, a stepped plaza for gatherings, and playful interventions such as children’s hovering trampolines. In doing so, the project creates not only connectivity, but also vibrancy and inclusivity — transforming a point of separation into a civic space of encounter.
Sustainability and memory are layered into its material and spatial language. Structural bases are built from rammed earth, their warm tones evoking Doha’s soil while providing thermal mass and a low-carbon footprint. The suspended ring is formed of steel for lightness and durability, while the deck is finished in breathable terracotta tiles that naturally cool underfoot. Overhead, canopies inspired by dhow sails and woven fishing nets filter sunlight, catching the breeze the sail moves an sways creating a dynamic skyline for the city that resonates with Qatar’s seafaring heritage and craft traditions. Together, these materials and forms root the plaza in place, while responding intelligently to climate and comfort.
From above, the plaza reads as a continuous horizon, inviting residents and visitors to walk, cycle, and linger in a safe and shaded environment. From within, it offers framed views of the Corniche, the park, and the skyline — a new perspective on the city that celebrates both its natural setting and urban energy. By reconnecting sea and land, movement and rest, the design fosters a stronger culture of walkability and community life.
Al-Bidda Wasl is an optimistic vision for Doha’s future — a place where infrastructure becomes civic space, and where tradition and innovation merge seamlessly. It offers a resilient and climate-responsive model for urban life, showing how the city can continue to grow while honoring its cultural memory and human needs. Above all, it is a gift back to the pedestrian: a suspended plaza that elevates belonging, encounter, and the joy of movement in the heart of Doha
